Ride with the Champions: Claudio Chiappucci
Born in 1963, Claudio Chiappucci is from the province of Varese, Lombardy, where he was born on February 28 under the sign of Pisces. Everyone knows him with the nickname of El Diablo, for his grit, strength and tenacity when riding. Claudio Chiappucci's beginnings date back to 1982, when he was just 21 years old. In that year he wins both the Lombard and Italian Champion titles. The affirmations among amateurs culminates in 1984 when Claudio wins 11 races, becoming the best amateur in Italy. This curriculum opens the doors to professionalism in 1985. In 1991 and 1992 he obtains the Polka Dot Jersey at the Tour de France as best climber, as well as the equivalent Green Jersey at the Giro d'Italia in 1990, 1992 and in the 1993. He wins the Milano-Sanremo in 1991 and the Clásica of San Sebastián in 1993 and he arrives second in the World Cycling Championship in 1994. Even today his arrival with his arms raised in Sestriere, at the end of the famous stage of Tour de France he won in 1992, gives the chills: the whole world remembers it as one of the most incredible feats of all time in road cycling. He has retired in 2000 and since then El Diablo has always been at the forefront as a testimonial and organizer of sporting events.
